Lanie by Jane Kurtz [An American Girl Book]
Lanie was born with outside genes. Her friend Dakota is on the other side of the world having adventures. Lanie is a scientist. She loves science experiments. When her aunt came to visit they planted a garden. They made a squirrel feeder. Then a bird detective broke a leg. Her aunt replaced the bird detective but left a new science journal for Lanie. Lanie did not want to plant anymore, but she planted and planted until the backyard was full. Then she found a few surprises in her own backyard like a wren building a nest and squirrels eating the seeds in the garden. To protect the plants, she put red pepper on the ground and the squirrels did not like it.
